When Should I Upgrade to 4K Video Signage?
Posted on Tuesday, February 4, 2020

The 4K revolution will be televised, and it will look spectacular. Go into any retail store’s home electronics department and you’ll find an array of 4K TVs—many in sizes unimaginable only a few years ago. Manufacturers’ prices have plummeted, making this new standard for ultra-high definition video less expensive and more accessible than ever. So when should you upgrade? The answer is now.

What Are My Installation Options?

If you plan on keeping the video source relatively close to the 4K display, a video cable that supports 4K resolutions (like High-Speed HDMI or DisplayPort 1.2) will do just fine. However, signal degradation occurs for A/V cables over greater distances and you will rarely find a digital video cable longer than 25 ft. For those installations that need to go beyond conventional cable length limitations, there are fortunately new, affordable 4K extender kit options available.

4K Over Cat6

By using just a Cat6 cable and 4K extender kit, 4K over Cat6 transmits content over longer distances than a regular HDMI or DisplayPort cable. In order to support 4K video’s higher bandwidth, you will need to use Cat6 cable (4K video is NOT possible with Cat5 cable). Tripp Lite provides Cat6 cables in lengths up to 200 ft., as well as bulk Cat6 cable. Once you find the right cable length needed for your installation, you will be able to use your 4K over Cat6 extender kit to transmit 4K audio and video up to 125 ft. away from the source.

Now is the time to upgrade to 4K video signage. View Tripp Lite’s 4K over Cat6, 4K over fiber and wireless 4K extender solutions today.

4K Over Fiber

To achieve even longer distances than 4K over Cat6, 4K over Fiber uses multimode fiber cable and 4K extender to connect displays up to 985 ft. away. Fiber cable also offers other benefits, like resistance from line noise and radio frequency interference that may degrade signal quality.

Another big benefit to using a 4K over Fiber installation is if you have a multiple non-4K displays in your installation, select fiber extenders can let you connect those displays with varying resolutions like 1080p and 720p without affecting the new display’s 4K signal transmission—ultimately saving you money.

Wireless 4K

If you have a temporary video installation or need the ultimate in placement flexibility, consider going with a wireless 4K extender. These new wireless solutions transmit 4K video up to 98 ft. away while also eliminating the need for costly cable runs and wire clutter.
